There are a variety of painting mediums available to artists, each with its own unique set of properties.  

Some painting mediums are more opaque than others, which means they can be used to create a range of different effects in a painting. More opaque mediums can be used to create a sense of depth and dimension, while less opaque mediums can be used to create a sense of light and airiness. Mediums can also be mixed together to create unique colours and textures. 

Gesso, for example, is a popular choice for priming canvases. It is also used to create textured effects and to thicken paint. Varnish is another common painting medium that can be used both to protect paintings and to create glossy finishes. Acrylic gel and pouring mediums are often used to create smooth, even surfaces and to increase the transparency of paint.  

Experimenting with different painting mediums is one of the best ways for artists to find their own unique style. There is no right or wrong way to use a painting medium, so have fun and see what you can create!
